The Foundation awards grants almost exclusively to 501(c)(3) legal aid/public interest law organizations that provide direct legal services, legal assistance, and legal advocacy in Northern California. An exception will be made in our most northerly counties where access to legal services is more limited. In these geographically remote areas, the Foundation will consider funding programs that are legally related, even if neither legal representation nor attorneys are involved.
The Foundation uses an online grant application system; all requests must be submitted through the system. Once you have read the Guidelines section to determine that you are eligible to apply for a grant, you need to determine what type of applicant you are: NEW/RETURNING or RENEWAL.
- A NEW/RETURNING applicant is one who has never been funded by the Foundation OR one that has been funded prior to last year.
- A RENEWAL applicant is one that has received a grant last year and will be reporting on that grant as part of their grant request.
Once you determine your eligibility and which application you should complete, you may begin the application process.
